This website is good and we need more of those to help entrepreneurs to start their business.
One of the main reason of failure is a lack of market research because actually few entrepreneurs really survey their target market.
This article is a good article to show how important it is to test your market and to do it in the objective way:

Thanks for sharing the article.
Whether you are running a business or planning to start, it is always good and recommended to do a market research. If you are starting a new business, you first need to figure out if there is a demand for your product or service. Also do a competitor analysis. Networking, online research methods can often do the trick.

Re: Market Research - Test your market first!
I prefer to look at market research as a mini marketing campaign. It should be done online and actual sales / beta users counted.
Google Keyword tool has made questionnaires and focus groups obsolete. People type their darkest desires into google which they never will share in a focus group or questionnaire. Instead of paying thousands of euro on market research (anything less and the research is worthless). Spend a few hundred on a live online campaign where you test your value proposition, sales copy and landing page layout.
If the mini campaign is profitable then you can scale. If not, then back to the drawing board.

Re: Market Research - Test your market first!
If one wants to start a new business then he should survey the market by which one is going to compete so that one can understand the public needs and the success of business. Suppose one without survey go ahead like one sell sand in the desert like area then he gets only failure so the market research or market survey is necessary.

Specifically the target market not just globally but in the area where one conducts his business, unless the business plan involves a more global approach. I would say it's not enough just knowing the figures you have to be in the market yourself for a while to gather how it works and how your product or service will fill a gap!
